The western European countries under their current governments are so desperate to take the wealth out of the Donbas and, eventually, Russia itself, that they are willing to start another devastating war to get it. Riches for a select few at the expense of everyone else.
I hope Russia can hold out against the Europeans and end this on their terms. As Mr. Realist says here, this will only put them on pause for a while but a pause is better than all out war.

If Russia believes that the aggression of the West toward Russia will end when they take control of eastern Ukraine, they are sorely mistaken. It will continue for decades.
I found Krainer's analysis clearly and carefully stated, and strong in both depth and breadth. There is however a spectre hanging over the leadership of the 'West' that Krainer, unless I missed it, made no reference to: the West's political leadership spearheaded or enabled the injection of most of the population of the West with a variety of "safe and effective" experimental bio-weapon materials re the COVID scamdemic.
And to expedite that mega crime against humanity, basic medical, constitutional and ethical principles like the primacy of informed consent were repudiated. Also, a vast global propaganda campaign was waged, a de facto war on truth, which included attacking and censoring those who disputed the propaganda.
As the victims of the COVID atrocity increasingly understand the magnitude of the crime they have been subject to, the revolutionary potential that Krainer referred to and partially explained increases.
The current attempt to legislate a hyper-totalitarian control over free speech in many western countries is also an attempt to stifle public understanding of and political repercussions to the COVID atrocity.
So yes, the West's 'elite' are desperate for war with Russia to create not just the tribal us vs them insularity that war brings, but as an excuse for martial law and further repressive internal measures.
